BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA!
That’s right Los Angeles residents! For one night only, midnight November 28th, the Landmark Nuart Theater on Santa Monica will be showcasing BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA…one of my FAVORITE movies of ALL TIME. Jack Burton’s tank top, Wang’s perfect English, Egg Shen’s twitching eye, Lo Pan and his three disciples kicking ass, the girl with GREEN EYES. This is John Carpenter’s finest moment. And probably Kim Cattrall’s (SEX IN THE CITY) break out role. (I don’t count Police Academy)
Watching this movie had to be one of my first experiences seeing Asians playing a big part in a Hollywood movie. Not like Long Duk Dong from 16 Candles(AUTOMOBILE!) or Takashi from NERDS (HAIR PIE). I grew up watching traditional Chinese movies with my parents that would have guys flying around and special Chinese magic so I was use to that. But seeing Asian characters speaking perfect English and being the center plot of the story was so AWESOME! And I never realized how ridiculous Jack Burton was in this movie until I got older. He has such memorable and retarded one liners…quite Arnold like. My favorite part of the movie though had to be when Lo Pan and Egg Shen square off and battle each other with BLACK MAGIC style. When Lo Pan uses his pinkies and thumbs to fight is classic! What’s your favorite part?
If you haven’t seen this movie yet, then this is the perfect chance to experience it. I also recommend New Japan across the street from it. One of Arowana’s classic joint to go to when we use to live on the West Side. Cheap and mmm mmm mmm good!
