I just got back from Fantastic Film Festival in Austin, Texas. First time in Austin, first time at Fantastic Fest. It’s one of the geekiest, nerdiest, and intense film festival experience ever imagined and I loved it. If you love horror, then you must come to this festival one day. They held it at the famous Alamo Drafthouse theater aka “BADASS CINEMA” where all the seats had tables in front of you to order food and drinks (even beer) throughout the screenings. Of course, every seat (besides the front row) still had a great view of the screen. My one big lesson in horror that I learned was that I averaged seeing one penis getting cut off a day. I guess its the norm. WOW! The fest wasn’t totally filled with horror but also many other genres so I’d thought I would share with you of what I thought were some great films that I saw. Of course, don’t consider me a true critic who uses confusing big words to sound like a genius but merely a fan of cinema. Here we go. Read more...
Action, accents, and aliens…oh my! District 9 is a smart and entertaining movie that’s worth your hard earn money. We heard this movie was all shot on digital RED camera. That probably doesn’t mean much to the norm, but to indie filmmakers like us, its the future. The movie moves perfectly through every beat. And the alien action is both creative and gruesome. That would probably be the only warning about this movie. That and the wife’s acting. But that’s just us. Two thumbs up! Go watch a good movie!
Hayward born, Eduardo and Jose Quiroz are at it again. The two brothers are back writing / directing in another adventure tale, I Got Five on it Too. The film is shot all in the bay and is a sequel to their 2004 success, I Got Five on it; both films star Todd Bridges of Diff’rent Strokes fame as the man of reason who knows what u talkin bout willis. Jose Rosete also stars as Oscar the storyteller and Chris Angelo steals many a scene with his umbrella toting, street hustling, Barney Bumble. Complete with bay area locations and throwback jerseys, this is definitely one movie that will have you reminiscing about the yay in no time.
Ooooohhh mannnn! This trailer of TRON LEGACY is ridiculously amazing!!! Best of all, its coming out in 3D. WHAT!!! We know we’re climaxing prematurely but unfortunately it doesn’t come out in theaters until 2010. But all you TRON fans who grew up in that era will enjoy this trailer. 3D!!! Also production stills from COMIC-CON.
We’ve been hearing since the beginning of this year that this movie, NINJA ASSASSIN, was coming out soon. Supposedly, it failed the expectations of the studio execs to be released in theaters (maybe because of Speedracer) but luckily its now slated to come out November 24th. We can’t actually say whether or not it’ll be good, but seeing all these behind the scenes videos on set of the movie and just having a majority of Asian American talent as the cast, we’re still looking forward to seeing it. The poster is badass! The youtube videos are pretty sick! The trailer, well, its doing its job by wanting me to see more.

Francis Spufford describes Where the Wild Things Are as ‘one of the very few picture books to make an entirely deliberate, and beautiful, use of the psychoanalytic story of anger’ in his discussion, The Child that Books Built. Spufford notes the transformation of Max’s room to, ‘the private forest of fantasy and the unconscious, from which Max journeys(in ”a private boat”) to meet the Wild Things of his Anger’. He goes on to detail why he doesn’t see the story as one of fright, ‘It didn’t occur to me to fear the bedposts bursting into leaf, or the terrible teeth the Wild Things gnash, or the terrible eyes that roll. I thought the end took away the risk from it all.’ Mr Spufford makes a great point in retrospect, but to a young reader discovering Maurice Sendak’s book for the first time, it can be very intense. When we saw this new trailer for Star Trek, we actually kinda got excited. Call us nerds but it looks like a pretty good movie. Well, at least the guy who cut the trailer did a great job. Comes out May 8th.
