GRAN TORINO
Check out this new movie with Clint Eastwood. Most people know him as one of the greatest actors of all time. He’s won oscars for Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven. He was Dirty Harry man! But some people (hopefully only a few) don’t know that he’s a damn good director too. Million Dollar Baby was crazy. Changeling (it was worth my bargain matinee) was tight. Letters of Iwo Jima and Flag of our Fathers I enjoyed. And Mystic River, that was sweet. And now his new movie, GRAN TORINO.
Clint Eastwood plays this hardup military veteran whose seems like he’s definitely not color blind. He gets new “Chinese” neighbors with nothing but drama from local gangsters. But the neighbors are actually Hmong decent and the movie follows a Hmong story. So its an obvious A to B story of how Clint Eastwood’s character changes. Just to get this out of the way but the Hmong’s have had a crazy story of survival in recent history. The leader of Laos, Vang Pao, won’t admit his act of genocide towards the Hmongs after the “Secret War”. I mean when you try to extinct an entire culture, the word that comes to my mind is genocide. And this was just in the 1970’s.
I think the special treat to this movie is finding out about these actors I’ve never seen on the big screen. Bee Vang (16) from Minnesota, plays Tao. He’s a first time actor. Ahney Her (16) from Michigan, plays his sister I think, Sue. She’s another first time actor too. WOW! And Doua Moua (21) from NYC, plays the thuglife gangsta wha wha, Spider. He’s been in numerous films and theater productions. Anyways, I’m EXCITED. If any kind of Asian culture can work in the mold of Hollywood, much props! And Clint Eastwood is badass anyways. He saves the day for cowboys, white people, black people, boxers…its about damn time he saves some Asian people.
Comes out in DECEMBER. I think I smell BEST PICTURE! What do you think?
