HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO EVERYONE TODAY!!!
We aren’t giving out candy nor pennies at our house tonite. Why? Because 1. All the years living in LA, we’ve probably gotten a total of two trickortreaters and 2. Its about 50 steps up to our dark and scary house. So who could blame the kids. Do kids still go out and trick or treat? Or do parents just buy them candy and call it a night?
I don’t know about you guys, but my mom use to give out the most ghetto candy for Halloween. One year it was haw flakes (chinese wafer candy). Another year were those red chinese candies people usually give out during Chinese New Year. They leave this weird coating on your tongue and taste like plastic. And another year, my mom gave out individual starburst candy. Who knows what she was thinking? But after a while, we started to just pretend we weren’t home or I would have to dawn my homemade ninja suit to collect candy to give out.
But a few of my favorite traditions were making a haunted house for the kids at church. It might have been ghetto but it did the job. A karaoke machine, few wigs, clown suit, doctors suit, an axe, and fake blood goes a long way. One night of losing my voice was well worth the smiles and shocks on those kid’s faces. Another would be my brother and I carving pumpkins back in the days. I truly wish digital cameras existed back then. We would make Batman, GI Joe’s, Lo Fu Gi (chinese cartoon characters), Megatron, Scooby Doo, Voltron…you name it. Here’s one I tried to make last year.

Haw flakes are the BOMB! Be thankful that your Mom made a effort and passed out candy.
