Journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling

Two journalists from the emmy award winning Current TV were detained Tuesday by North Korean soldiers after they ignored their orders to stop filming.  Laura Ling and Euna Lee are reporters for the San Francisco based media outlet and were planning a border trip to report on North Korean refugees.  The Yalu river they were headed towards is a ‘frequent crossing point for both trade and the growing number of North Koreans seeking to flee their country’ as reported by Kwang-Tae Kim. Ling’s sister, Lisa Ling, was a cohost on the View and currently does field reports for Oprah.  The last correspondence from Ling was a Twitter message stated that she was at the Seoul airport headed to the China/NKorea border and, ‘Hoping my Kimchee breath will ward off all danger.’  A third member of their team, the cameraman, was said to have escaped arrest at the last moment.

The situation is made difficult since the US has no direct relations with N Korea nor a embassy available. ‘Foreign journalists standing on the Chinese side of the border are often jeered at by North Korean border guards, some brandishing rifles just steps away.’  Our prayers are with the journalists making it back safely, as well as the hope that they return with valuable insight (keep that footage safe!) to shed light on the ongoing civil rights violations in North Korea.

On a enlightened note, there is a serious situation in North Korea.  North Korea is not a laughing matter and there are people dying there as we speak.  As filmmakers, we create…to create ideas, thoughts, and dialogue on social issues that can hopefully find some change in the world.  We should all attempt to make this world a better place.  We are the privileged ones, remember if you’re reading this, you are better off than 98% of the world.  If you would like to learn more about the situation in North Korea, please do, there are lots of groups out there.

LINK is also dedicated in protecting and aiding North Korean refugees that make it across the borders. Constantly, tens of thousands of refugees flee North Korea. Why? What would cause someone to leave their homes, their friends and families, and their country? Something MUST be wrong in North Korea. maybe its the famine, maybe its the lack of freedom, or maybe its just the torture and violence that happens to them. Pick one.

Currently, North Korea doesn’t allow cameras nor barely any tourist or reporters. They don’t allow cell phones or outside entertainment like books and movies. No outside influence whatsoever! The only thing people can do is what the country lets them do and watch, meaning what Kim Jong Il says. This is communism at its finest…or should I say WORST. I’ve read somewhere that right now, what he’s doing to his own people is worst than Hitler and any other f&$ked up dictator has done combined in history. My question is do world leaders like BUSH or the UN Council have knowledge of all this. OF COURSE! But will they take action. I think we already know that answer.

I’d really like to know if any of you knew about this or this is the first time hearing about this. Cuz honestly, I was completely ignorant until NOW. F#@k being broke or other stupid problems I have. There are far worst things going on in the world right now.
